My name is Louise Cardwell, I’m 26 and live in a town called Ipswich in Suffolk. I work as a Matrimonial Solicitor and Collaborative Lawyer for a firm called Atkins Thomson in Bury St Edmunds.
After completing my “A” Levels, I went to Sheffield Hallam University and studied Law and Criminology for three years. I then followed with a one year course at Nottingham Law School, where I obtained a Diploma in Legal Practice before returning to my home town to complete a training contract in a local firm.
I qualified as a solicitor in 2008 and joined my current firm, Atkins Thomson where I enjoy a varied caseload, ranging from divorce through to private child care matters. I’m currently a member of Resolution, which has a code of conduct promoting a conciliatory approach to family law matters and represent my client’s interests in a proactive, non-confrontational manner while maintaining a suitably robust stance when necessary to achieve the best possible outcome for my clients.
When I am not at work I enjoy going to the gym, music, reading a wide range of literature and going to the cinema. I also enjoy partaking in more exciting activities such as diving and ski-ing when the opportunity arises. My goals for this year are to learn how to snowboard and to speak Thai.
I am very grateful for the opportunity to participate in Rotary’s Group Study Exchange. I believe that the experience will enable me to expand and develop my current skill set, as well as learn about how my vocation works in Southern Illinois. I am particularly keen to see how Collaborative Law fits into family practice as it’s a concept that originated in America and is fairly new in England.
